It was another just another day in the gym
I was done with my warm up drills to begin
Out of the blue, my trainer calls out to me
Let’s do a few push ups for the upper body
So I got down on the mat in plank position
slowly bending my elbows with trepidation
I lowered myself down like a plank of wood
Halfway through, I thought I was doing good
‘Great! Now push yourself up’, he shouted
But I was not moving anywhere as expected
My arms began to shake like a tree in a storm
My body held no posture whatsoever or form
With shoulders shrugging their way to the ears
It is startling how fast the strength disappears
My spine was beginning to creak under gravity
both legs were begging me to have some pity
‘C’mon! Brace your core’, the trainer bellowed
‘Push the ground down’ he said and I followed
But my grit and will were nowhere to be found
I was just an inch away from hitting the ground
Gravity had pulled me faster than I’d expected
Without further delay, the gym dust was tasted
Face and floor stuck in a way I dare not separate
My heart squeezed & squealed under my weight
I could hear my spirit cracking like a phone screen
& my trainer cracking up loud like for a viral meme
I gathered my breath, limbs, and will to live together
and bolted before he could ask me to do another!
